A Family Affair: Goodbye June marks Kate Winslet's directorial debut, and the screenplay was penned by her son, Joe Anders. The premise was inspired by Winslet's personal experience with the death of her own mother.
Winslet's Reluctance: Winslet initially didn't intend to direct the film but decided to take on the role after reading Anders' script. She felt she couldn't "give it away" and wanted to see it come to life with her vision.
Giving Opportunities: Winslet chose several newcomers as department heads, including the composer, production designer, and costume designer, reflecting her desire to give opportunities to emerging talent. The film's composer, Ben Harlan, was Winslet's children's music teacher.
Intimate Atmosphere: Winslet adopted unconventional filming methods to create a more intimate atmosphere on set, such as using small microphones on actors instead of traditional boom equipment. For some scenes, Winslet locked off the cameras and left the actors alone in the room to create a feeling of privacy.
London Calling: Goodbye June was filmed entirely in London, United Kingdom, over 35 days. A university served as a backdrop for hospital scenes, and soundstages in London were used for indoor and driving scenes.
