Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was the author of Werther, the romantic novel that was transformed into a play during Goethe's lifetime and which initiated the whole German romantic movement. The book's story tells of young love and suicide. In this East German film, based on a book by Thomas Mann, Lotte (Lilli Palmer) was the woman who served as the model for the heroine in the novel Werther. She comes to Goethe's hometown for a visit, and her experiences there eerily re-create episodes from the book. Goethe comes across as a pompous old bore, and his friends as pandering sycophants, in this very proper communist party-sponsored, anti-heroic movie.

Although the familiar sign "Today closed" hangs outside the Zur schönen Aussicht restaurant, it's not at all quiet inside. A letter from the travel agency causes a stir: A representative signs up to offer the beautiful view a package deal. Much to the chagrin of the landlady, as she has a house full of guests and is booked up for several years in advance. Nikolaus Plaschke in particular, a regular guest and silent admirer of the landlady, fears for his beloved vacation bed. So he devises bold plans to scare the travel agent away.

After her funeral, a stranger who had attended Steffi′s funeral for a short time is also found dead in a lake, and the connection between the two cases becomes apparent.

Benno (Torsten Rennert), a bright boy from Berlin, is not really a problem case, although his parents have enough trouble with him. Ilse finally decides to go away to a quiet place on her own, leaving her Robert to prove himself as a househusband. After all, he didn't want to go away. So Robert waters the flowers, empties the neighbors' mailboxes, looks after the pets and stacks the coal in the cellar for the winter. When brother-in-law Gerd visits Robert, he finds a strange naked young woman in the bedroom and neighbor Doris hiding in the laundry box. But Robert and the two women are able to explain the situation when his wife returns from her short vacation. She sees that her husband is also made for housework and wants them to share it more in future.

Heinz is a well-stocked veterinarian in Klückow and his Jana in quite firm, although not always present hands. And now - as Aunt Alma is slowly getting rid of the concern for her beloved nephew - Dr. Kröpelin finally got his chance: he makes a marriage proposal to Alma. She would not be averse if it had not been his "bloodthirsty" hobby, the hunt. A get-together on the high seat is still not a desirable prospect for Alma. But the more she refuses, the tighter Kröpelin bites into his intention to marry her anyway, whatever the cost.
