A road movie set in present day Bulgaria, a country remains optimistic, mainly because all the realists and pessimists have left. At a meeting with his banker, a small business owner, who drives a cab to make ends meet, discovers the bribe he will have to pay to get a loan has doubled. The ethics board that reviewed his complaint about extortion now wants its share of the action. At his wit's end, he shoots the banker and then himself. The incident sparks national debate on talk radio about how despair has taken over civil society. Meanwhile, six taxi drivers and their passengers move through the night, each in hope of finding a brighter way forward.

During the Cuban missile crisis in 1962, a Russian submarine strays into American waters. On board is a nuclear cargo destined for Castro. There is a small village near the sea and behind the state border electronic alarm system. Its last inhabitants are seven old toughs prone to practical jokes and easy living. At the funeral of the last elderly woman in the village they get fired up with the idea to hire a "tart" and throw a party. The girl in question has been fired from the striptease bar in the nearby town. She arrives with her little son. The old toughs, the girl and the boy establish friendly relations. Meanwhile a lieutenant from the frontier post falls in love with the girl. Later on two more stripteasers pay a visit to the first one and make friends with the old guys. A small group of foreign hunters and their guide join the company due to a raging storm. One of the stripteasers devises a "business plan" which suits everybody and soon everything in the village looks incredibly fine - until the goons of Madame Cornelia come to get things in order.

High in the mountains of Macedonia a team of young film makers are making a documentary about Katerina Vandeva - a descendant of an ancient and very famous family. Several former state and party functionaries interfere in the filmmaking in the hopes of manipulating Katerina's confessions for their own purposes. One of them is taking a genial young man to his unforeseen future; he would marry his beloved; have a son; become a brilliant doctor; do his duty and save the live of enemies of the communist regime; get a 20-years sentence for that. Prison would turn out to be an unbearable nightmare; his wife would eventually give in to the tortures of the authorities and seek divorce; this would mean no one to visit him in prison. 15 years without any news about his child, only a snapshot of his family on which the tree of them are smiling and happy.
