Fernes Land Pa-Isch (2000)
The 16-year-old Umberto, who lives in an East German small town with his mother and his little half-sister Bianca, dreams of Pa-isch, the country to which Bianca's Angolan father returned long ago. Pa-isch, a verballhorn of the Portuguese word for country, is far enough to no longer have to see the changing men's acquaintances of his drinking mother. When the family moves to Hamburg, everything gets even worse. The mother professionalises her constant partner changes and becomes ill with all abundance. Umberto's flame Tschibo also turns out to be a prostitute. Umberto is full of nose. He steals a heavy machine and breaks up to Africa with Bianca.

Fallada: The Last Chapter (1988)
This biographical film is set in 1937, with Fallada suffering the effects of living under a microscope. The film details his decline, as he is intermittently imprisoned and threatened in order to motivate him to write for the Fatherland. Even the attention of his kind, patient wife and loving children begin to feel oppressive to him. This is one of the few films to take a serious, in-depth look at the tribulations of a creative artist pulled in all different directions by the real world.

The Woman and the Stranger (1985)
Based on a switched identity, in circumstances that are found in real life as well as fiction, this drama tells the story of two soldiers fighting together in World War I. Karl (Joachim Latsch) and Richard (Hans-Use Bauer) become close friends while serving time in a German POW camp. One day Karl manages a successful escape and goes to Richard's home where he seeks refuge posing as Richard. But Richard's wife Anna (Kathrin Waligura) has never given up hope that her husband is still alive -- a possibility that would shatter Karl's proposed new life. In fact, Richard did not die in the POW camp. This film shared the Grand Prix award at the 1985 Berlin Film Festival.

Der Menschenfresser (1994)
A crime writer on a train to Berlin shares her compartment with a mysterious man who claims to be a cannibal. Initially intrigued, she tries to humorously dismiss his claim while her imagination sparks a new novel featuring Detective Rosa Roth, who investigates a similar case. As the journey progresses, the writer’s confidence fades, replaced by fear and mistrust. The man’s behaviour becomes more unsettling, especially after a young girl reports inappropriate comments from him. In the dining car, he claims to have eaten a fellow passenger and reveals his tools are nearby. Despite her fear, the writer is drawn to learn more about his methods, blurring the lines between her novel and reality. Ultimately, her fantasy merges with reality, leading to dire consequences.
