Søndreø is a small, peaceful island in one of Denmark's fjords, owned and run by the old farmer Lars Søndervold and his son Søren. But times are hard, and everything is not going as it should. The greedy, bragging merchant Anders Lundrup has used all means to gain possession of the island, and one fine day Søren and his old father must leave their ancestral farm and the island. Søren swears an expensive oath - he will earn so much money that he can one day buy the farm and the island back, and at the same time he swears revenge on Anders Lundrup.

The villagers are distrustful towards the newcomers. After a while the baker, the butcher and the grocer won't give Poeten and Lillemor credit anymore. Also the old creditor is back dogging them. Should Poeten renounce his high poetical standards and write simple verses for popular music, to get money?

In a large shoe store, Erik Hansen is the salesman for a sweet and smart young girl, Edith Bjørnfeldt, with whom he falls head over heels in love. He persuades her to go out with him in the evening. At a dance restaurant, they accidentally meet Edith's brother Willy Bjørnfeldt, a Copenhagener and one of the smart go-out types of the time. When Edith and her brother are alone at the table for a moment, Willy advises her to seize the opportunity and marry Erik, and thus say goodbye to the shoe business, which is hanging over her by the throat.

We are in a small Heurigen-Café in Vienna. The young singer Fritz Hertzgruber meets a young Danish writer, Jesper Ellekilde, and the two young people become friends immediately. Fritz has been to Denmark as a "Viennese child" and is now an enthusiastic member of the Viennese children's own club. The following evening, the club's annual draw for a trip to Denmark takes place, and Fritz is the lucky one - albeit by detours. Fritz and Jesper are accompanied to Denmark, where Fritz is very much looking forward to the reunion with his foster parents, the composer Emilius Andersen and his wife. They were the sweetest people to their Viennese child, and their home stands in Fritz's memory as the epitome of idyll and harmony.

When waiter Thomas Hansen has put aside 10-øre on 10-øre to become a hotel owner, you can clearly see that the spirit has changed. It is not enough, by the way. Therefore, Thomas borrows the missing 10,000 kr. from a guest, rentier Birkehøj, who remarks that he can always get those shillings back when Thomas has become a millionaire. But, for the record, Thomas writes him a receipt on the back of a sandwich note. Then Thomas starts building his hotel - and then Birkehøj dies. Thomas' entire fortune is eaten up by smart money men, and he ends up as a farmhand. He only gets a job again when a maid is laid off. Thomas becomes a housekeeper, and in his new job he encounters justice. A hotel owner Ravn from Ringkøbing shows up as a guest in the house.
