The story of Sukhadi, a twelve-year-old Adivasi girl who makes a daily trip to a sleepy railway station to fetch water. Police Inspector Ghote lives a middle-class life in Bombay along with his wife, Pratima. He has been employed with the Bombay Police for many years.
