Beautiful Vienna during the Austro-Hungarian era. Lixie, a court councilor's daughter raised in a middle-class family, has fallen in love with the piano teacher Toni. To make a good impression on Lixie's strict father, Toni urgently needs a job. Then chance comes to Lixie's aid. At the Hotel Sacher, she meets Archduke Peter Ferdinand, the very man who could help Toni. But the Archduke only has eyes for Lixie. An unsuitable love affair develops between the two, which quickly escalates into a political scandal in Vienna's high society.

Captain Ebbs is an older, experienced seaman who has, however, only sailed on freighters. While his current old barge, the Martin Luther, has to go into the shipyard for an overhaul, the shipping company gives him command of the elegant cruise ship Julia to temporarily replace a colleague who has fallen ill. In the Vienna of the Biedermeier era, the young Carl makes a delicate wager with two officers: If he does not succeed in presenting a new romantic adventure by the next day, he has to treat the soldiers to ten bottles of sparkling wine. Albeit he tries in vain to seduce the pretty maid Franzi, Carl brags about his alleged conquest the next day in his favourite pub. When the senior lieutenant Stephan, who is head over heels in love with Franzi, hears about Carl’s putative success, he writes, out of his lovelornness, a catchy song about the carefree maids of Vienna. A young Italian worker is always having problems with his coworkers because he doesn't understand their language. His only friend is a dog that came up to him. This movie takes place during the premiere of Mozart's Die Zauberfloete (The Magic Flute). Not really depicting his entire life and loves, much of this is fictionalized scatology. Although not without basis in fact, Mozart has attained a somewhat colorful reputation and this is really just more of the same. The music is a joy, but the movie bogs down in titillation. Mozart's last days were lived in poverty and disgrace--stemming chiefly from his embracing of the Freemason stance, which was essentially a heresy in Austria and the rest of Europe at that time. None of this is depicted and even a satyr could not sustain the lifestyle Mozart has been portrayed as having here. Still, this is an interesting movie and worth a listen to.
