At the beginning is a suicide attempt by sculptor Jiří Malek, which is foiled by a thief hidden in his apartment. Malek is thirty-five, divorced, caring for his five-year-old son, and the reason he turned on the gas in his studio is, of course, his wife. Mr. Karas, who takes care of Málka's household, tries to get rid of his gloomy mood by using alcohol. But after Jiří insults the old man and they break up badly, Málka's older brother Oldřich decides to find a woman who would be a good wife to Jiří, a mother to little Martin and a good friend to him. She should be pretty, intelligent, understanding, love children and be able to cook, wash and clean. To avoid any mistake, Oldrich will draw up a test, the results of which should decide.
