Maidan Nezalezhnosti, or Independence Square, is the central square of Kiev, which gave its name to the large-scale anti-government movement that unfolded in Ukraine in the winter of 2013-2014. A movement that led to the overthrow of the existing regime. However, the happiness of the newfound freedom was overshadowed by the ensuing Russian annexation of Crimea and bloodshed in Eastern Ukraine, inflamed, controlled from Russia.
