On a West German Autobahn, Robert plummets from a bridge and is hospitalized. As he recovers, he flashes back to a Bulgarian holiday where he met Jutta and her uncle Lothar, who’d ordered a West German passport to smuggle her out of the DDR. Back home, Robert and Jutta marry and have a daughter, Anna, but Jutta still yearns for the West. Lothar arranges their escape: Robert, Jutta, and Anna hide in a car trunk, but delays doom Anna. At the border, a grief-stricken Jutta blames Robert; distraught, he leaps from the bridge, surviving to face his guilt. A film banned in the GDR.

After Elmers, the head of the publishing house, is reported missing, his son-in-law Jürgen Brandt is targeted by the Hamburg criminal police. Inspector Graumann and his assistant Weber presume murder. The suspicion against editor-in-chief Brandt is confirmed by the fact that he is incriminated by the testimony of several witnesses. At a press conference, Brandt claims that the Elmers murder case was staged only to exonerate the innocently convicted family man, Parsetti. But to Brandt's horror, Elmer's body is actually found.

Benno (Torsten Rennert), a bright boy from Berlin, is not really a problem case, although his parents have enough trouble with him. But that's not just because of Benno, but because no one really has time for him. During a train ride, he meets a pensioner Oskar Schrader (Erwin Geschonneck), who likes to cook, collect watches, master magic tricks and who lives in the middle of nature. Between them they develop a real friendship. Benno is allowed to spend his school holidays with his friend. The grumpy Oskar lives alone in a garden colony - with friendly and unfriendly neighbors.
