What’s a star in a movie? A black dot in the film negative. In the nineteen eighties I enjoyed painting on 35mm blank film and painted a negative. That means every frame was painted in reverse color - black became white, blueish green became red, yellow was to be sort of blue. The result: all colors are on black background - like in the windows in old cathedrals. The music was improvised after the film was finished by Jasper van’t Hof, vocals by Eva Mattes. The film was premiered in competition at the Berlinale 1985.

Two aspiring filmmakers walk through Hamburg with a camera operator and a sound operator. From the time they get out bed to their encounter with a production manager, they are harassed by an intermittent white dot.

Symphony of a big city: Manhattan's legs rush to work, to a break, to pleasure, to church - or run marathons. Thomas Struck's camera follows them at foot level. Each foot has its own rhythm, which clarinetist Don Byron transforms into jazz. But sometimes a step goes too far. Sex magazine editor Dian Hanson explains how and why.
