Reeling in the Dreams: Southern California Bluefin (2020)
Bluefin hadn’t been seen in Southern California waters in any numbers for almost 50 years. But when the feeding pins were set up off south of the boarder about a decade ago, an unexpected thing happened. With nothing else to do but swim in a giant pin and get fed, these initial school sized bluefin began spawning. Broadcast spawners the fertile eggs drifted outside the pins and a “new” school of baby bluefin tuna were created. With perfect water conditions and a plentiful supply of bait, these fish stayed around and year after year continued to grow and breed and before anyone really knew what was happening, we had a bluefin tuna fishery in our back yard. Initially 20 to 25-pound fish were being caught. Each consecutive year producing larger fish. This year we’re anticipating setting a new California state record when a 400-pound local fish will be captured.

Secrets of Midway Island: Fishing Virgin Waters (2020)
The film gives us a glimpse back at what fishing the Hawaiian Islands a hundred years ago was like. Join us as we head out to a tiny coral atoll located in the middle of the Pacific about halfway between the continental United States and Japan twelve hundred miles north of Honolulu known as Midway. Midway is the most remote inhabited land mass on the planet and has been closed to all but military personnel since the second World War. But in 1996 the island was opened for the first time to civilians and you can image how good the fishing was. A strategic Naval Air Facility since being bombed by the Japanese on their way to Perl Harbor forcing the United States into World War II, a 200 nautical mile, no-fly, no-marine traffic "Forbidden Zone" surrounding the entire atoll was initiated during the war and had remained in place until 1996.

Running out of Hilgrem’s Sportfishing in Oceanside, we jumped onboard the beautiful Oceanside 95 for a run out to San Clemente Island in search of the exotics. This overnight trip proved to be very productive as patience and light line paid off on the slow drift and long soaks for the bluefin tuna. With sea temps reaching 76 degrees (about 8 degrees) warmer than normal for the offshore Southern California bight, the fish were there in numbers but for the most part reluctant to take a bait with a hook in it.

Marlin Mission off Mexico's Mag Bay (2020)

"Packy" Offield as we join him and his fine crew of John Talsky and Bobby Lee onboard the Kelsey Lee for the first ever satellite tagging program designed specifically to determine the mortality rate of released marlin. Working hand-in-hand with Tom Pfleger and PIER, the Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research with Dr. Michael Domeier, PhD. and Dr. Heidi Dewar. Mag Bay is located about 750 miles down the Pacific side of the Baja. In the fall Mag Bay and the Thetis Bank are perhaps the most productive and prolific marlin fishery in the world. Being invited to work with Packy Offield and the Billfish Foundation with his fine crew John Talsky and Bobby Lee onboard the Kelsey Lee in what has proven to be the most important billfish study ever undertaken. Working with Tom Pfleger, founder of PIER the Pfleger Institute of Environmental Research in an attempt to place over 40 time released satellite tags into stripe marlin.
