The year is 1997, and World Peace seems to have come, with most classic weapons of mass destruction having been abandoned. However, orbiting the Earth there is the European/American space station FLORIDA ARKLAB, capable of controlling the weather at any location on the planet underneath. A civil project by nature, it might be abused as an offensive weapon, since it could deliver devastation to any potential adversary simply by creating natural disasters such as storms and floods. No wonder the space station soon becomes the central point in rising political tensions between East and West, next stop World War 3 (as indicated by the tagline "The end of our future has already begun"). We follow the main protagonist Billy Hayes, an astronaut aboard the station, as he wades through a plot of secrecy and sabotage trying to tell friend from foe in the process.

In the confrontation with his role as Rio, in the controversies with Caspari and in the collaboration with Jako, Till and Arne, who play the band members, the boundaries between past and present become blurred, and not just for Nick. The situation escalates when the group retreats to Fresenhagen, the country house of the "Scherben", in a voluntary state of emergency. Despite his love story with Caspari's daughter Julia, Nick feels attracted to Jako and at the same time perceives this mixing of role and life as manipulation by Caspari. Jako, in turn, turns to Julia. The group threatens to break apart.

Adapted from the novel Die Döppelgänger by Theodor Storm, this black-and-white drama tells the tragic story of a war veteran who, in 1860, returns to his home in Schleswig Holstein after serving a term for robbery. There he finds nothing but hardship and rejection, save from the town's mayor and a young servant girl, whom he marries. Ridiculed and abused, with practically no work, he turns to drink and one night accidentally kills his wife. The child of their marriage is taken away from him, and at this point he is left with the options of becoming a robber, starving to death, or emigrating.
