Freckles, an orphan with disabilities, gets a job at McLean's lumber camp as a guard in Limberlost forest. Although the forest is infested with desperate characters, Freckles shows courage and determination. A beautiful girl whom he calls the "Swamp Angel" and the "Bird Woman" assist him in driving off timber thief Wessner and his gang. Later, Freckles refuses a bribe Wessner offers if he will permit Wessner to steal some trees. Instead, Freckles gives Wessner a beating, and his loyalty to McLean earns him a cash reward. Freckles falls in love with the Swamp Angel, but the social differences between him and the girl prevent him from declaring himself. He makes no attempt to recover when a large tree falls and seriously injures him. His recuperation is hastened, however, when the girl expresses her love for him.

Returning to his hometown, Bill Duncan conceals his identity due to a longstanding feud with the Flynne family. He is soon found out and arrested for the murder of rancher Red Flynne. Flynne's estate is bequeathed jointly to his foreman Rolfe McPherson and his daughter Helen. Helen believes her father wished her to marry Rolfe, unaware that he plotted the murder. Clued in by the housekeeper of Rolfe's guilt, Bill escapes and pursues Rolfe who has kidnapped Helen and is headed for the Mexican border. Bill comes to the rescue, brings the villain to justice, and wins Helen.

Lafayette Jordan (Davis), financier, plans to inundate Caribou Canyon and turn it into a reservoir, but the villagers will not sell him their land. She plants a microphone in the closet, gets Bull drunk, and, by accusing him of not having the killer instinct, taunts him into boasting of having killed Bingham.
