One of his customers makes an elaborate chicken costume for a voodoo-like scene with a doll resembling his plump neighbor. She, in turn, has a doll that resembles him, which she whips and dominates in an abandoned church. The TV news reader has her own fantasy involving carp. Her husband, who is indifferent to her, steals materials to fashion elaborate artifacts that he rubs, scrapes and rolls across his body.

Military investigator Karel Vrana tries to persuade Klára to cooperate against Roth and occult circles within the army. Klára refuses, but expresses her support for Vrana's goal of finding the stolen parts of the colonel's body. Meanwhile, Lieutenant Roth is called to the battlefield of World War I, and Vrana sets out across Europe to search for von Haukwitz's remains, which are being used by occult groups. Klára moves to her family farm in Moravia, where she receives another part of the body—the hand of the wounded Lieutenant Roth.

The real fate of Jiří Arvéd Smíchovský, a prominent hermeticist, occultist, believer in black magic and an exceptionally well-educated person with a brilliant memory. This avid book lover had doctorates in law, theology and philosophy and was fluent in five languages. He was interested in occult teachings, practiced magical ceremonies, was in contact with the Freemasons, but at the same time he was a member of the National Fascist Community while being homosexual. During the war he cooperated with the Nazis, after the war with the communist StB.
