Half Moon (2006)
Mamo, an old and legendary Kurdish musician living in Iran, plans to give one final concert in Iraqi Kurdistan. After seven months of trying to get a permit and rounding up his ten sons, he sets out for the long and troublesome journey in a derelict bus, denying a recurring vision of his own death at half moon. Halfway the party halts at a small village to pick up female singer Hesho, which will only add to the difficulty of the undertaking, as it is forbidden for Iranian women to sing in public, let alone in the company of men. But Mamo is determined to carry through, if not for the gullible antics of the bus driver.

Verdi: Messa Da Requiem: Abbado (2001)
When Giuseppe Verdi composed his Requiem Mass, he knew it was a profound and moving piece of music, but he could not have known it would be performed 100 years later to honor the centennial of his own death. This stirring concert series from 2001 captures all the drama of Verdi's masterpiece. Conductor Claudio Abbado draws out magnificent performances from the Berlin Philharmonic and talented singers Angela Gheorghiu and Roberto Alagna.

Requiem-29 (1970)
UCLA's Ethno-Communications Program's first collective student film had intended to capture the East Los Angeles Chicano Moratorium Against the War in Vietnam, Aug. 29, 1970, but the film turns into a requiem for slain journalist and movement icon, Ruben Salazar. The film shows footage of the march, the brutal police response and resulting chaos interspersed with scenes from the rather callous and superficial inquest. Filmmakers attached to the project have confirmed that the original elements for the film disappeared over 40 years ago.

A Film about Anna Akhmatova (2008)
A Film about Anna Akhmatova is not a biopic. Rather, it is a live process of recreating a story akin to ancient tragedy. Before the viewer's eyes it emerges from archival and modern footage, unique sound recordings of Akhmatova's voice, her poems and photographs, and the many paintings and portraits of her, with the commentary of the poet Anatoly Naiman, who knew Akhmatova in her last years.

A Requiem for Syrian Refugees (2014)
Scored to Gabriel Fauré’s well-known Requiem in D-Minor and shot in stark black and white with a crew of refugees who felt the urgency to convey their situation to the world, A REQUIEM FOR SYRIAN REFUGEES is a wrenching portrait of survival, resilience and empowerment in the camps of Northern Iraq. An intimate perspective on the daily lives and emotions of their fellow refugees, REQUIEM is also a poignant reminder of the civilian toll and trauma of 21st Century wars and an alarm sounded against indifference to the suffering and courage of millions, a non-partisan call for humanity and compassion.

Verdi Requiem (2007)
The production itself is quite beautiful: recorded in the Basilica di San Marco in Venice in November 2007, it highlights the cathedral's splendor, the reverent audience, the soloists, orchestra and chorus with near-perfect cinematography. The soundtrack is also acceptable, which may have been quite a task to achieve, given the Basilica's over-reverberant acoustics. Alas, the performance itself does not rise to the occasion. Despite the occasional minor insecurity in ensemble and a visible lack of joy, the Symphonica Toscanini musicians play well, the Coro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino members sing equally well, and the soloists are more than adequate, almost tangibly trying to excel.
