Laulumaiden muisto - karjalaisia lakeuksilla (2023)
After the end of the war, Finland had to find a new home for a total of about 430,000 evacuees, of which about 407,000 were Karelians. Laulumaiden muisto is an emotional documentary film that tells the story of the evacuees from Karelia and their descendants who were placed in the region of South Ostrobothnia. It sheds light on how the emigrants who lost their homes were able to preserve their own identity and why Karelia still fascinates and interests future generations. The war in Ukraine, which broke out in the middle of filming, made the documentary surprisingly timely.

Earth (1999)
One of Finland's most respected filmmakers, Veikko Aaltonen directs his first documentary about the changes of his home country since its admittance into the European Union in 1996. Most Finns are only one or two generations removed from farming. Even today, the country remains sharply bifurcated between traditional rural communities and cosmopolitan, urban society. The five years since Finland's entrance into the E.U. has been marked by a radical shift in its population -- largely to the detriment of its traditions and values. Aaltonen focuses on five people from three different areas, documenting their attempts at maintaining their traditional lifestyle. Some give up trying to improve and enlarge their farms after beating their heads against successive walls of bureaucratic indifference. Others score small, if temporary, victories, such as rescuing their traditional schoolhouse from destruction.

Plainlands (1988)
Based on a novel of the same name by the Finnish author, Antti Tuuri, this delicious late-80's comedy builds its dark humour on the stereotypical mentality of the northern part of Finland. While perhaps not as entertaining to a person unfamiliar with Finnish traditions, the brilliant acting, directing, plus the warm, beautiful Finnish summer more than make up for the cultural gap.The story begins with a group of brothers with their families coming up to honour the memory of their recently deceased father. Spending time together, opening old wounds and creating new ones... it all boils down to brotherhood. No matter what happens, brothers take care of their own.

Directed by Kalle Kaarna and produced by Oy. Filmi Kotka, the documentary is a strongly charged propaganda film. It begins in the open fields of smoke "by the bleached bones of fallen clubmen" and presents the birthplaces of the Lapua movement with their monuments and key figures. The climax is the main celebration held in Helsinki's Senate Square on July 7, 1930, where the strongman of the Lapua movement, Vihtori Kosola, gives his speech.
