Two young directors adapted the short stories of two Russian authors whose works had been banned for decades, and so their film ended up in the censor’s vault as well – for twenty years. Both tales look back to the post-revolutionary era: 'Angel' (Olesha) speaks tragically of the brutality and destruction of the time, and 'The Homeland of Electricity' (Platonov) captures its haunting grotesquery.

The Eleanor Roosevelt Story (1965)
An intimate and moving portrait of one of the most remarkable women in American history. It is the story of a lonely, unhappy child who became the most admired and respected woman in the world. Richard Kaplan's lively documentary reveals the human face behind the American icon, beginning with the emotional deprivation suffered by this plain, awkward little girl born into a socially prominent and powerful family. Though she would eventually marry a man who would look beyond her awkwardness, Eleanor was not content to be the proper, silent wife to her husband Franklin's extraordinary political career. Instead, she began a lifelong crusade to speak out about injustice and oppression in any form. Preserved by the Academy Film Archive in 2006.

Return to Zion (1920)
Return to Zion is Yaacov Ben-Dov’s third film and the first motion picture the JNF had acquired for distribution amongst Jews around the world. The film, thought to have been lost, was unearthed in Prague in 1989 and in the 1990s, a copy was handed over to the Israeli Film Archive at the Jerusalem Cinematheque. The film, among other things, features the imprisonment of Ze’ev Jabotinsky and his friends in Acre; Mandatory Palestine’s First High Commissioner, Herbert Samuel’s tours of Jaffa and Jerusalem; pioneering Jewish immigrants and their budding agricultural, rural and urban communities across the land; archaeological excavations in Tiberias and Jerusalem, and rare footage of early-days Tel Aviv.

The Dangers of the Fly (1920)
The Dangers of the Fly is an educational film made by Ernesto Gunche and Eduardo Martínez de la Pera, also responsible for Gaucho Nobility (1915), the biggest blockbuster of Argentinean silent cinema. De la Pera was a talented photographer, always willing to try new gadgets and techniques. This film experiments with microphotography in the style of Jean Comandon's films for Pathé and it is part of a series which included a film about mosquitoes and paludism and another one about cancer, which are considered lost. Flies were a popular subject of silent films and there are more than a dozen titles featuring them in the teens and early twenties.

Igor Stravinsky: The Paris Years Chez Pleyel 1920-1929 (1982)
Igor: The Paris Years, one segment of a larger biographical program created for Channel 4 on the life and times of Igor Stravinsky, finds the brothers working in a slightly different vein than the one that would come to characterize their later work. This is the first section, which covers the pianist’s “French period” from roughly 1920-1939, and it details, among other things, his connection with Jean Cocteau (who, as a matter of fact, contributes voice work to this project). Filtered through gonzo and impressionistic puppetry (often bearing strong resemblance to the work of Terry Gilliam), the film takes an unconventional and often beautiful stab at the television biography special.
