In 1941, as part of an effort to remain strictly neutral, the Dublin government made a deal with both Berlin and London whereby any soldier, sailor or pilot captured on Irish soil, whether of German or Allied forces, would be interned for the duration of the war. What the Irish failed to tell was that they would intern everybody in the same camp. It is here that Canadian pilot Miles Keogh and German pilot Rudolph Von Stegenbeck meet after a fight in which both their planes were downed.

Mildred, a young stenographer, seeks protection at the mission run by Austin Farrol, known as "The Prince," when her employer, Trent, an unscrupulous politician, attempts to seduce her. Mildred begins to work at the mission and falls in love with Farrol. Farrol is accused of arson when a fire started by Trent destroys the mission. However, he escapes when the train he rides crashes. Farrol assumes a disguise, and gets a position in Trent's household. Shortly after being made the executor of a wealthy man's estate, a man murders his benefactor. He then makes a play for the widow, who rebuffs him. To escape his arduous pursuit, she takes her little daughter on a trip but dies in an auto accident. The daughter is rescued but disappears. Her grandparents spend years looking for her, as does the executor who killed her father--if she's found she'll inherit the estate and he won't get a penny. He aims to see that she's never found, and if she is he plans to see that she doesn't live long enough to make a claim to the estate.
