The Following (2013)

Notorious serial killer Joe Carroll, after being found guilty of murdering 14 female students on the Virginia college campus where he taught literature, escapes from death row. The FBI calls former agent Ryan Hardy to consult on the case, as he was the one responsible for Carroll’s capture in 2003. Ryan, working closely with an FBI team, including Mike Weston and FBI Specialist Debra Parker, piece together the ever-growing web of murders orchestrated by the devious Carroll.

Bacon's TV Hesitation: Kevin Bacon had been searching for the right television project for four years before signing on to The Following, wanting the flexibility to continue making films during hiatuses. He agreed to the show on the condition that the seasons would be shortened to 15 episodes instead of the standard 22.
Almost Scream 3: The initial concept for The Following was Kevin Williamson's outline for Scream 3, where Stu Macher (Matthew Lillard) would be revealed as alive and leading a Ghostface cult from prison. However, due to the Columbine High School massacre, the studio deemed the idea of teenage murderers too sensitive and changed the script.
Director's Inspiration: Kevin Williamson based the character of Ryan Hardy on Jack Bauer from 24, citing 24 as his all-time favorite show. He envisioned Hardy as someone who would sacrifice himself to save the day and carried the weight of every victim on his shoulders.
Casting Change-Up: Jeananne Goossen was originally cast as FBI agent Jennifer Mason in the pilot episode. However, the role was reworked, and Annie Parisse replaced her as Special Agent Debra Parker in subsequent episodes.
Pushing the Limits: To get away with the show's gory scenes, Kevin Williamson admitted to using "tricks" with Fox Broadcasting's Standards and Practices department. He would include an even more graphic scene to distract from another scene he wanted to keep, like focusing on a throat-cutting to get away with a sex scene.
