This series of videos will follow the restoration progress of a 1978 Series 3 Land Rover. Part 1, is an introduction to the vehicle and basic teardown.
The Land Rover has been with me for around six years. It’s a little rough around the edges, but generally OK. I’ve done a bit of mechanical work to it over that time. Including reconditioning the engine, rebuilding the gearbox, rebuilding both axles and the braking system, and many other small fixes along the way. But she has started to go downhill lately, particularly the condition of the body. Most of the body is aluminium, but steel is rusting rapidly.
So it’s time to do something about it…

S1E11 - Land Rover Restoration Part 10 - Front & Rear Axles 1/2
This series of videos follows the restoration progress of a 1978 Series 3 Land Rover. Part 10, rebuilding the axles.
We start by checking the differential for wear. Checking the backlash with a dial indicator, and checking the contact pattern. Next we replace the differential pinion oil seal.
The next task is to install the axle plugs and breathers. Then attach the stub axles.
From there we rebuild and fit the chrome swivel balls and swivel housings. Including rebuilding the housings with new roller bearings and Railko bushings. We’ll also look at attaching the steering arms, and setting the steering preload or tension using a fish scale.

We start by checking the looking at the front half shaft oil seal collars.
Then we replace one of the oil seal distance pieces on a stub axle.
From there we reassemble the brakes including fitting new brake adjusters.

This video includes inspecting an original fuel tank. Removing and realigning the distributor, which requires the removal of a hidden grub screw. Followed by a short sequence covering static ignition timing, and shortening spark plug wires. The PCV valve pipes need addressing, including silver soldering a hard line. Next, fitting a new SS stainless steel exhaust system. The video also covers fitting spherical washers, new stainless steel exhaust hangers from Emberton Imperial, and a brand new Britpart fuel/petrol tank.
