Elmo's World (1998)

Season 31

"Elmo's World" is a fifteen-minute long segment that was shown at the end of the children's television program Sesame Street. It premiered in late 1998, as part of the show's structural changes, to appeal to their younger viewers, and to increase their lower ratings. The segment was developed out of a series of workshops that studied the changes in the viewing habits of their audience, and the reasons for the show's lower ratings. "Elmo's World" used traditional elements of production, but had a more sustained narrative. It was presented from the perspective of a three-year old child as represented by its host, the Muppet Elmo, who was performed by Kevin Clash. In 2002, Sesame Street's producers changed the rest of the show to reflect its younger demographic and the increase in their viewers' sophistication.

S31E1 - Flowers, Plants & Trees

Elmo opens his door to an avalanche of flowers and plants, and is raised off the floor by a tree. Dorothy wants to know how you give water to a plant. Mr. Noodle's brother Mr. Noodle takes a drinking glass out of his pocket, fills it with water and takes a drink. He fills up the glass again and tries to let the plant drink from one of its leaves and offers it a straw before pouring the water into its pot. In response, the plant shoots a stream of water back into his face. Kids water their Geraniums and potted trees while a baby chews his finger in front of a stuffed toy flower. Elmo counts 9 squirrels in a tree before he realizes that it was one squirrel popping out 9 times to fool Elmo. Elmo asks Drawer what else grows out of the ground, such as carrots, orange trees and worms that live in the ground. Except for Slimey who lives in Oscar's trash can. Elmo shows a video about his friend Cody who grew his own plant.
