Based on real characters and events, this haunting drama focuses on the personal sacrifice of a Prague history student, Jan Palach, who set himself on fire in protest against the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia in 1969. Dagmar Burešová, a young female lawyer, became part of his legacy by defending Jan's family in a trial against the communist government, a regime which tried to dishonour Palach’s sacrifice, a heroic action for the freedom of Czechoslovakia.

Barrandov Studios, once one of Europe’s most modern film factories, became both a cultural refuge and a propaganda tool under Nazi occupation, churning out Czech comedies and romances to keep the public distracted while its actors mingled with German authorities. Czechoslovakia in 1992 - communist regime has fallen short time ago and soviet occupying army is quickly retreating back to eastern Europe. Wagons leaving the country are full of weapons, ammunition and equipment. Two young students testing new railway control system find out, that some of soviet wagons disappear on their way home. They try to find out the reason, but one of them is found dead and second way is probably on the run. Senior warrant officer Roman Redl with team of investigators is trying to reveal reason for murder and trace the criminal ties, that could leaves east from Czechoslovakia.

This time the detectives deal with the case of a murdered professor. One day a cleaning woman finds him shot to death in his own study. The detectives will thus investigate whether the murder is connected with the victim's persistent effort for the removal of the University's quaestor because of the latter's strange machinations during the reconstruction of the University building. And they'll also want to know why the murderer took the great risk involved in killing the victim on the university soil. The search for the answer to the question who could wish the death of the peculiar but honest professor will take them farther than they have expected.
