Journey to the West is a Hong Kong television series adapted from the classical novel of the same title. Starring Dicky Cheung, Kwong Wah, Wayne Lai and Evergreen Mak, the series was produced by TVB and was first broadcast on TVB Jade in Hong Kong in November 1996. A sequel, Journey to the West II, was broadcast in 1998, but the role of the Monkey King was played by Benny Chan instead, due to contract problems between Dicky Cheung and TVB. Cheung later reprised the role in another television series The Monkey King: Quest for the Sutra, which was broadcast on TVB but not produced by the station.

Told in reverse chronological order, the story starts in the present (June 7, 1994), when the stock market rebounded after the market became volatile and crashed for the weekend. After the stock market stopped trading for the weekend, the Ting's make the wrong bet and their entire fortune is wiped out, compounded by ending up in billions of dollars in debt. Ting Hai forces his sons to commit suicide by jumping off from the top of the stock exchange building before following after them.

Bandit Chao investigates the theft of the Tianyi Holy Water from the Shengshui Palace and discovers that his friend Nangongyi, the leader of the Beggar Clan, and the monk Wuchin are involved and want him dead. Meanwhile, Chao's three female confidantes suddenly disappear, prompting him to search for them in the country of Yanyu. However, he becomes embroiled in a political coup there, masterminded by Wuchin disguised as another and his mother, Golden Bodhisattva. Chao confronts them, returns to the Central Plains, and is ambushed by Shuimu, the head of the Shengshui Palace, who wants to kill him. Chao sneaks into the palace and overhears Shang Yan, a disciple of the palace, reveal the truth about how Shuimu framed him to cover up a secret. The three engage in a life-and-death battle.

During the Tang Dynasty, Emperor Taizong favored his concubine Wu Meiniang. She fell in love with the crown prince Li Zhi, and the emperor asked her to become a nun before he died, with the promise that Li Zhi would bring her back to the palace in three years. Wu returned as the Empress Dowager and eliminated her rivals. After Li Zhi's death, Wu continued to control politics, even deposing his successor, Li Zhe, and proclaimed herself as the first female emperor, changing the name of the dynasty to Zhou. With the help of loyal ministers, Li Zhe was eventually reinstated, and the Tang dynasty was restored.

In the sixth year of Baoyou, the Mongol army pressed the border, and Fan Chengshun general Zhang Tianshun saved the people of Fancheng, handed over the yellow dragon sword containing the anti-yuan roster to the partial general Fan Guoxing, and then killed himself, so that Guoxing sent his head to surrender the enemy.
