Told in reverse chronological order, the story starts in the present (June 7, 1994), when the stock market rebounded after the market became volatile and crashed for the weekend. After the stock market stopped trading for the weekend, the Ting's make the wrong bet and their entire fortune is wiped out, compounded by ending up in billions of dollars in debt. Ting Hai forces his sons to commit suicide by jumping off from the top of the stock exchange building before following after them.

Local patrol leader Lun Junwen is devoted to his mother Lun Bashen. They run a candle shop together. Junwen's close friends include Niu Bainan and his uncle Yu Luming. Still unmarried, Junwen pursues his fellow townsman Jiang Lihua, who returns to find her missing brother and sister-in-law, unaware that Junwen is involved in their disappearance. Junwen struggles to express his feelings for Lihua and faces complications when Niu Bainan inadvertently worsens the situation. Hou Tiantang and Liang Sheng met Li Jinmei ( Liang Peiling ), who was pure in nature, was forced to enter the entertainment industry because of her uncle's greed, and was pursued by the film company boss Zhuo Ruoli ( Wu Qiming ).

Police Cadet '84 was a TV series which included such stars in TVB as Tony Leung, Maggie Cheung, and notably, Carina Lau. The story centered on a couple of young "cadets" in the Police Cadet School. Tragedy, romance, conflicts, and intrigues were featured. The series was immediately followed by a sequels titled "New Police Cadet '85" and "New Police Cadet '88". Both sequels stars Tony Leung.

In the early 90's Ching Long, a young rebellious man who moved from Hong Kong to Taiwan against his father's wishes, and his best friend Ko Tin Chun, who is a successful young architect.
