CMT's Next Superstar is a music competition series specializing in country music. It is launched by American Country Music Television specialty station CMT in partnership with producer Nigel Lythgoe and his son, Simon Lythgoe. Nigel Lythgoe already produces the series American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. The 10-episode series premiered in April 2011 on CMT. Each episode will be one hour-long episode. Contestants, mainly undiscovered singer-songwriters in the country genre will compete while living together in Nashville, Tennessee. Celebrity guests will guide them each week. Each week, one finalist will be eliminated and viewers will have the final vote to determine who will win the title. An album of songs by participants is due mid-to-late summer 2011. Also best competitors will take part in the CMT Summer Tour. On June 10, 2011, Matt Mason was crowned the first winner of the show and will go on tour that summer.

These celebrities will quickly move from mechanical bull to riding some of the biggest, meanest animals from the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) tour. If the celebrities can conquer their fear, avoid injuries and get a passing grade from Murray, at the end of their training they'll ride in front of a packed auditorium at a PBR event in Nashville. The celebrities will even get a chance to pick their poison, choosing which legendary bull they'll ride in the finale. It's the ultimate man versus beast showdown. The celebrities will get instruction and advice from Murray, legendary cowboy Cody Lambert and some of the greatest riders from the PBR tour. Ty Murray, a founding member of the Professional Bull Riders, Inc. (PBR) is retired from competition.

Top Twenty Countdown airs every Friday at 11:00 a.m. and reruns on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at 11:30 a.m. Besides showing the biggest videos, Lance also shows the world premiere of music videos. The show celebrated its 300th episode with the top 20 videos of 2006, based on the weekly countdown. They also recapped the top 20 videos from 2001-2005. The show has had celebrity guests such as Blake Shelton and Brooks & Dunn. The show originally aired each Friday at 10 p.m., Saturday at 11 a.m., Sunday at 10 p.m. and Monday at 6 p.m. The first episode was the top 20 videos of 2001. It was announced in November 2009 that Lance Smith would be leaving the show in December 2009. Evan Farmer took over as the show's new host on January 22, 2010. He left the show in November 2012.
