Due to his gambling addiction, farmer Hans Sværke has brought his farm to the brink of bankruptcy, thereby opening up the opportunity for the wealthy landowner Karius to achieve his goal of taking over the farm. However, parish bailiff Mikkelsen vouches for Sværke and saves him for the time being, and Sværke then leases the farm. Sværke dies, and his talented son Niels takes over the lease. He and the farmer's daughter, Grethe, are happy together, and Niels manages to get her hired at the farm. But Karius' daughter, who is in love with Niels, burns with jealousy and persuades her father to take advantage of Niels' difficult financial situation and take over the farm. Things look bleak for Niels, who has been cornered by the wealthy landowner. But one day while plowing, he sees something glinting in the soil...

Martin vender hjem med en god sum penge på lommen efter at han har arbejdet på Grønland. Han slår sig ned hos sin søster, der driver kroen - men meget er ændret. Mest skuffet er han over, at hans ungdomskæreste Martha har giftet sig med Just Hovmand, som har gården ´Lunehøj´. Martin starter en maskinstation - og er straks klar til at hjælpe Martha og hendes mand, da de kommer i økonomiske vanskeligheder. Somewhere on the island of Funen, where the hedgerows surround the meandering fields, lies Uglegaarden. It is the largest and richest farm in the parish, and is owned by the widow Dora and her three brooding stepsons Karl, Viggo and Thomas. Their regular haunt is the village inn, where the crone Sara has to put up with their coarse-grained advances. The three brothers have big plans for the small neighboring farm Mosegaarden. They have discovered that under Mosegaarden's lean fields and high slopes there are large quantities of raw gravel. Chr. Thorup, who owns the site, has mortgaged the farm far above the chimneys. Now the Uglegaards brothers are just waiting for the right time to take over Mosegaarden. But when Thorup's son, Henrik, unexpectedly shows up at Mosegaarden, the three brothers' sinister plans are thrown into disarray.

The vineyard is facing demolition. It has been 30 years since Uncle Olsen died, and after 30 years, the farm must be sold if no one in the Martin family wants to buy it. When a Danish-American arrives in the small town, Jacobsen sends Nicoline to investigate the stranger's room. Erik Hein, born Martin, tries to buy the vineyard but is prevented from doing so. Instead, he buys Sophienberg. Many years ago, Erik's father signed a confession of embezzlement against the vineyard. Erik believes in his father's innocence and gets help from some of the town's righteous residents to prove his father's innocence.

Men da han dør, vender sønnen Niels hjem fra Australien for at overtage godset. Så let går det dog ikke. Sagførere trækker arvesagen i langdrag, og i første omgang arver Niels kun galophesten Ibrahim. Niels satser hårdt på at vinde årets store løb på galopbanen, og det er her Poul Reichhardt synger den berømte schlager Ibrahim til sin hest.. I kampen for at få familie-godset får Niels utrolig hjælp af sin tro følgesvend, karlen Nicholajsen.
